Overview

For a group of friends or a large family planning a classic cultural Andalucia holiday, visiting Granada and Ronda, Cordoba or Seville, this Antequera location is just right.

Our rural choice here is La Joya (430 inhabitants) on the verge of El Torcal Natural Park, typically Andalusian and easy-going, where we offer a recently reformed holiday home in the quiet, unpretentious village.

It is not a particularly inspiring property. The outstanding feature is its Moroccan-style patio, a vast 275 square metres comprising a 10-metre swimming pool, sun terrace and a stylish saloon, where you can relax with games or a barbecue.

The main living room is a generous 40 m² and there's another sitting room upstairs.

We'd have liked a larger kitchen, but it's well-equipped and there's plenty of china and glasses for everybody.

There are six bedrooms, two on the ground floor and four on the first floor.

At the rear of the house, the patio with its swimming pool is the most popular and social place to spend your time. It’s quite private as neighbouring windows do not look directly at it.

There's a fountain here and the shady, furnished Arabic saloon is a refreshing area to relax after a day out. It also has a brick-built barbecue. This covered recreational space is a cool space that invites you to sit or play games such as table tennis, darts and board games, or just relax with a book in the shade.

Just around the corner are a village shop and a simple restaurant that serves drinks and meals from breakfast to dinner time. You can also walk to the bank and pharmacy.

Within day-trip reach are the great jewels in the Andalusian crown:

• Classical Granada with the Alhambra is 1 hr 30 mins away.

• Orange-blossomed Cordoba and its magnificent mosque are also 1 hr 30 mins.

• Ronda, a mountain town of bandits, bullfighting, Rilke, Hemingway, Orson Welles, and a famous chasm, is again 1 hr 30 mins.

• Quintessentially flamboyant Sevilla is 2 hours.

The immediate area to AX22 is also of significant interest: El Torcal Natural Park is just a few minutes drive and offers signposted walks through phantasmagorical rock formations! Strongly recommended.

Further afield, you can also visit the impressive El Chorro limestone gorge, especially interesting for the reservoir area with its outstanding views and picnic spots. El Chorro has an infamous and death-defying high-altitude walkway, which is now strictly off-limits.

At Laguna de Fuente de Piedra you can see Andalucia’s largest lagoon and a Natural Reserve which is the breeding ground for flocks of pink flamingos.

Antequera town, 20 mins away is less exciting, but the historian and anthropologists amongst you will find the Dolmen caves an ancient curiosity well worth visiting.

The property is also convenient for arrival from abroad: 55 mins by hire car from Malaga Airport.

Amanda | August | 2019

I highly recommend this beautiful Andalucian villa which perfectly catered for our family of eight. Easy directions and ‘arrival instructions were provided leading to a very efficient check-in, and the well appointed property was extremely clean and tidy on arrival. The website photos above are very accurate and show the property as it looked when we arrived. It is a very large, self-contained and secure property. Of the six bedrooms, two are on the ground floor making it very accessible and safe for both the very young (2yr old) and elderly members of our party. There were plenty of chairs, sun beds and crockery for all of us and the en-suites had plenty of towels. The kitchen had everything we needed to self-cater and there was an automatic washing machine in the games room which was so useful. We did a big shop when we left Malaga airport, and arrived with our groceries. The tiny village had 2 bars, a shop, pharmacy and a bank and a restaurant. Antequera was a 20 minute drive away, great for shopping or dining and it took about an hour to drive to the beach and Malaga coast, whilst Ronda and larger tourist towns were about 90 mins drive. The surrounding landscape is breathtaking with spectacular photo opportunities. This was a fantastic rural retreat for a large group and we were very happy to spend long lazy days on the beautiful terrace, in the pool and playing chess or table tennis. The outdoor kitchen was great for summer dining. This was a wonderful villa in rural Andalucia. Thank you Rustical Travel"

Leslie | May | 2018

Villa was lovely very spacious and lots of areas for us all to inhabit. Kitchen May be a little small if you have a big group but was fine for us. Location in the village is great there is a ship opposite that sells just about everything! There is a restaurant only a few yards away that did excellent local food and drink. Good locationfor day trips and bigger shops only 20 mins away. We all had a great time, with 6 bedrooms and lots of space this was ideal for us. The only issue was that the owner assumed that 6 people were sharing 3 bedrooms, so there was some annoying texts from my party to me the organiser as soon as I landed, we had paid for all 6 rooms so some process failed a little bit but was resolved."

Rustical Update

We have added another check to our protocols to remind again property managers about the correct Accommodation Options so they can make sure they have ready the correct number of bedrooms.

This is a lovely property in a small authentic village. We loved the small shops and the restaurant which meant we did not always have to get in the car. Having fans and air conditioning meant we could use a combination to keep the property at a very comfortable temperature. If there had been more of us (we were 5) I think we would have found some of the facilities to be very limited. There was not enough kitchen equipment to cook a proper meal (large pans, serving dishes etc) and only 3 pool towels were provided. Plus if the property was full there were only 6 sun loungers and clearly not enough crockery and glassware for anywhere near 12 settings. We stayed 11 days and normally would have expected a changeover of towels and linen after one week. This did not happen but was not an issue given our shorter stay - if we had been there for a fortnight I think this would have been more of an issue though. We had a lovely holiday in a lovely area - and the choice of properties from Rustical Travel is very good - so I am sure we will be travelling with you again."

Rustical Update

When the property is booked for more than 5 people, property managers confirm they make sure it is equipped for the number of guests on the reservation.
