Overview

The villa is located on a very quiet lane just outside a modest country town, where the last houses dwindle into the green Galician countryside. You can walk down the lane and cross a small river to see grapes for the famed white Albariño and Godello white wines ripening in the sun.

It’s one of the warmest regions for holidays in Northern Spain, very close to the broad River Miño which represents the border with Portugal.

It’s easy to cross back-and-forth between Spain and its neighbour over the bridge at Vila Nova de Cerveira and fascinating to experience and compare the two countries on a single holiday.

There’s lots to enjoy and discover here, so do read on.

The property is one of a few lining a lane that is interspersed with gardens and orchards. It’s a very quiet neighbourhood, with just enough people so that you don’t feel isolated. The owner’s parents live occasionally next door and are on hand if needed, but otherwise leave you discretely to enjoy your privacy.

The accommodation starts with a high, wood-ceilinged living-and-dining room, where leather sofa and armchairs sit on a floor of smooth, polished red brick. It is a simple holiday home with nice touches.

The natural illumination is what stands out here and if you look at the photos, you’ll see why. The entire length of the wall out to the garden is an unbroken series of floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding glass doors, so that sunlight floods in.

It’s a non-smoking environment, clean and fresh.

While the TV is not satellite, we do know that it picks up Portuguese channels from over the border, which always show movies in the original language.

The property is all ground floor and there are no drops anywhere, so we consider it a good choice for families with toddlers, as long as an eye is kept on the pool, which is not gated.

The pool is surrounded by lawned gardens, planted with fruit trees, where there is plenty of room for children to play.

To one side of the garden is a shaded area with garden furniture and barbecue for al fresco meals.

Five minutes’ walk down the lane from the house brings you to a lawned play area for children, and further on is a tranquil, leafy riverside area where you can picnic and even take a dip. It’s shaded by oak trees and little bridges cross streams to take you further along and down to a small weir. Here you can see acres of wine grapes planted in long rows, as well as a hill (Monte de Ton) famous for its ancient petroglyphs, which you can visit.

The small river is clean and refreshing. A path runs all the way (8 km) along it to the point where it flows into the River Miño: a lovely walk.

You can also walk into town from the house for shopping. Tomiño isn’t of great interest in itself, although it has a couple of café-bars and a rustic restaurant with a pub-style garden that is popular for evening meals.

More interesting are the riverside cathedral town of Tui and Vila Nova de Cerveira just across the border in Portugal.

Tui (20 mins from the villa) is situated on the broad River Miño, which marks the frontier with Portugal. It’s a delightful, historic town of old stone buildings and squares, a lovely place to walk around and have lunch or go out for drinks in the evening.

We recommend the Portuguese border town of Vila Nova de Cerveira (15 mins from AG22) for its charm and culture. A medieval fair is held here in the summertime, there is hilly countryside with great views, and the river beach has lawned areas to spread towels and a very good outdoor bar-café-restaurant.

Also, just 25 minutes away on the coast, are Spanish ocean beaches and the port of La Guardia, whose fish restaurants that are worth the trip alone. A great chance to sample the seafood for which Galicia is famous throughout Spain. La Guardia dock has a fish auction at four in the morning – not that we expect you’ll want to miss out on sleep to be there, but this long-standing tradition is quite an event.

On the way to La Guardia, there are two detours to Galicia’s past. One takes you to the Muiños do Folón: nineteen water mills, the oldest of which dates back to the 12th century, built in a cascade down the hillside. The other takes you up Mount Tecla to hilltop ruins of Celtic settlements and extraordinary high views down the River Miño estuary and over the ocean.

The area between the villa and the coast is perhaps best known for its wines. The Rosal vineyards produce some of the top albariño white wines in Spain. For many, a cold glass of albariño with fresh fish or prawns is one of the highlights of a holiday here.

If you want to visit one the most beautiful small city in Northern Spain, Santiago de Compostela is an hour and a half by car. Santiago also has an airport with low-cost flights.

Laura | August | 2024

Lovely villa with ample sized pool, double garden and lots of space inside. The high ceilings and stone walls keep the building quite cool but worth noting there is no air conditioning. We mentioned to the host future guests might benefit from a couple of electric fans in the hot spells. The town of Tomino is a good 20min walk / 3 mins car drive away and has supermarkets, food market plus lovely square with bars/restaurants. This villa is also in a great location to explore nearby villages and towns (Oia La Guarda and Baiona)."

Hi, House setting is great, owners were brilliant and can't be faulted. House and equipment however could do with an update; cutlery, plates etc need renewing as we only had 3 bowls for a 6 person house for example. The showers all need descaling as weren't very good. Garden furniture was old and in need of replacing. No major issues, just some updates in what's provided"

One the best houses I’ve ever been. Clean, quiet and extremely comfortable, with all the things you may need to have a great stay. Thank you to Elena and her mother Concha who gave us wonderful products of her orchard. The pool area is amazing and also all the Baixo Miño is a location incredible with great climate, gastronomy and places to visit. The main problem is that time runs very fast but we are planning to get back next summer. We love this place."

Loved the villa, which was well equipped with all we needed. Loved Galicia - all the delicious food and wine! Lots of nice places to eat in walking distance (be warned portions are very large (not the tapas portions I am used to) and we over ordered on a number of occasions!). We landed in Santiago de Compostela at 4:30pm and had a very quick and smooth exit from the airport so arrived at the house at 6:30pm, not the 8:00pm the travel company had predicted. The hosts were very accommodating for our early arrival."

Really relaxing location with friendly hosts next door and river walks nearby. Within 10 minute walking distance of a rural town with shops and bars and restaurants (o candil recommended). A Guarda is great as is the coastal drive up to Baiona). This the the region for Albariño wine- the festival is in Cambados each August and the vineyards are all around. We call this area the Spanish Cornwall (green and lush). Beware insurance to Portugal. Car hire in Santiago does not include this so book beforehand wisely"

The setting of the villa couldn't be better if you want peace and quiet. The view from the pool is extraordinary and the pool itself is perfect. The house is clean and well stocked with everything you could possible need. The hosts were incredibly friendly and helpful. Not only did they suggest a number of places for us to visit, they also provided us with fruit and veg from their garden and a gorgeous bottle of wine. A highlight of our stay was a walk to the river, where we could swim (briefly!) and there are plenty of wonderful places to visit nearby in both Spain and Portugal. If you want a family holiday with a difference that's off the beaten track, this villa fits the bill perfectly."

The villa has met our expectations based on your descriptions. We had a good time! The owners made a friendly introduction and the location is ideal for trips around the border and visits to the beaches. Just ons tip: the outside table and chairs are at their end of life. New ones would be a good investment. Good to say that the booking procedures and information send to us by Rustictravel was outstanding."

Rustical Update

We have informed the property manager about the outside table and chairs so she can evaluate if they need to be replaced.

This is a wonderful property. Lots of space, rustic furnishings and epuipeed with everything you need. The location is terrific, there is so much to do and see within easy reach on either side of the border. For us stand-out visits were Pontavedra, Valenca, Baionia. Caminha has a gorgeous square and the best ice cream in the area. There are so many beautiful little towns in the area you would be hard pushed to find one you didn't like. The Galacian sea-food we had high expectations of, and they were exceeded. The Octopus and baby squid (however cooked) are stunning. The bronze age encampments in both Galicia and Portugal are well worth a visit. As are the monasteries near Braga.. When we were here (September) there had been a lower than average rainfall so water pressure was a bit low (most noticeable in the shower, and a bit of cavitation in the pipes when taps were running). It wasn't a big issue and didn't impair our enjoyment of the property. The hand over and departure were smooth as you like, the directions given are excellant. Heartily Recommended"

We had a wonderfully relaxing holiday in this lovely area. The villa and pool were lovely and the boys (aged 7 and 10) loved a walk down to the local river to play on the rope swing with a quick stop off at the play area en route. There is so much to see and do in this area, we enjoyed visiting the local beautiful towns, had some memorable walks with stunning views and lots of delicious meals out, our favourite being at the local restaurant O'candil which is within easy walking distance. The owners next door are very welcoming, kindly providing us with fresh produce, in fact everyone we met were so friendly and kind despite us relying on our phrase book and sign language for conversation! What a fantastic holiday! We had a lovely week at this property after we had a week trekking Picos. We can highly recommend Camino Nova and Tomino for pastries and fresh bread in the morning. We had a great time on Cies too but could have spent longer than the morning we booked for - worthwhile spending the full day there. Baiona is lovely and so was Valença - definitely a place for towels and sipping a coffee / sprite. Kayaking was also great just doen the river from Tui.
